Irish FA condemn Northern Ireland fans signing anti-Catholic chant

The Irish FA has condemned video footage showing people wearing Northern Ireland jerseys singing an anti-Catholic chant.

In the video a number of people are seen singing "we hate Catholics, everybody hates Roman Catholics" to the tune of Tiffany's 1987 hit 'I Think We're Alone Now'.

The footage was posted on social media on Monday night and has been widely condemned.

In a brief response posted on Twitter, the official Northern Ireland team account @NorthernIreland replied: "This is utterly wrong and we condemn sectarianism in any form."

While the behaviour of those singing the chant has been condemned, there are a number of people shown in the clip who are not singing along or participating in any way.

It is unknown where or when the video was made, but it understood that it may have been taken in a bar on Sunday evening, the same night Northern Ireland played Belarus in a Euro 2020 qualifier .

Alliance leader Naomi Long said there is "no place for this anywhere".

The East Belfast MLA tweeted: "I hope that @NorthernIreland will work with the @ PoliceServiceNI and real fans to verify this clip, identify those involved and ensure they are banned from future games. No place for this anywhere. None."
