Irish EuroMillions winner Margaret Loughrey found dead at home

Irish EuroMillions winner Margaret Loughrey has been found dead in her home, it has emerged.

Ms Loughrey, 56, who famously won £27m (€31m) in 2013, was discovered dead at her Strabane, Co Tyrone, home on Thursday, in what police are describing as a "sudden death".

Confirming the incident, the PSNI told the Irish Mirror: "Police received a report of the sudden death of a woman at the Ballycolman Lane area of Strabane on Thursday 2nd September.

"A post mortem is due to take place but at this stage, the death is not being treated as suspicious."

In 2019 Ms Loughrey claimed she had only £5m of her fortune left after being the victim of numerous thefts.

And speaking out in a newspaper interview at the time, she said that the lottery win has brought her "nothing but grief".

"I have had six years of this and I don’t believe in religion, but if there is a hell, I have been in it. It has been that bad. I went down to five-and-a-half-stone," she told the Sunday Life.

"I won £27m. I have just over £5m left, but a lot of that I gave to people. I will never have peace as long as I live. Even if I didn’t have a penny left, I won’t."

Before winning the lottery, she said that she was "a happy person" but added that all the money has done "is destroy my life".

At the time of her win, she was living on benefits of €73 a week and since the windfall she’s had been handing out her money to people in need.

Ms Loughrey also splashed out £1m to buy the historic Herdman’s Mill in Sion Mills and had planned to transform it into a leisure and tourism destination.
