Motorists in Ireland whose driving licence is due to expire this year have given an extension as Level 5 lockdown restrictions remain in place.
Those who are entitled to an extension will receive a letter in the post advising them of the changes. It follows a similar move last year that saw licences extended for up to 13 months.
If you're getting an extension, you will not receive a new licence during it, but your driving record will be updated to reflect the changes.
You can still apply to renew your licence online or in person at NDLS by booking an appointment. You can now also apply for your licence online.
Here's what you need to know:
Driver licences
- If your licence was due to expire between 1 March 2020 and 31 May 2020, you have a new expiry date of 1 July 2021.
- If your licence was due to expire between 1 June 2020 and 31 August 2020, you have 13 months added to your previous expiry date. For example, a licence which expired on 31 August 2020 will have a new expiry date of 30 September 2021.
- If your licence was due to expire between 1 September 2020 and 30 June 2021, you have an extra 10 months added to your expiry date. For example, a licence which expires on 30 June 2021 will have a new expiry date of 30 April 2022.
Learner permits
- All learner permits that expired between 1 March to 30 June 2020 were automatically extended by 8 months in total.
- All learner permits that expired between 1 July to 31 October 2020 were automatically extended by 4 months.
- No further extensions apply to learner permits.
