Irish driver 'caught speeding at 259km/h in France' as they face major ban

An Irish driver will appear in court later this month in France after being caught speeding at 259km/h - in a 100km/h zone.

Officials in the Gendarmerie for the Seine-Maritime region were on patrol on Sunday afternoon on the A27 road, just outside of Lille.

In total, 18 drivers were caught breaking the speed limit, but the pick of the bunch was an Irish motorist.

He was clocked on the speed trap going a whopping 259km/h - more than twice the speed limit.

Officers managed to slow the vehicle down and got in touch with the driver.

His license was immediately seized, the driver was slapped with a €1,000 fine and will now face a court date where he risks being banned from driving in France.

Those who saw the post on Facebook were horrified at the incident.

One user said: "It's scary, and distressing to see such behaviors!!.. Thank you.

Another said: "259 kms / h I hope that the justice will ban him from French territory."

The Audi driver was eventually stopped by police in a rather unique way.

Replying to a user who had asked "How did you stop him? Did you follow him in a (Renault) kangoo?", the police said "at the toll!" adding a winky face to boot.

Under French laws, breaking the speed limit by over 50 kph can result in a maximum fine of €1,500 and six penalty points being added to your license.

As if that wasn't enough, you could also be banned for three years from driving in the country.
