Irish driver captures stunning footage of massive green 'fireball' meteor flying over Co Cork

An Irish driver has captured stunning footage of a low-flying meteor over Co Cork.

Sean Linehan was driving near Banteer, Co Cork at around 7pm on Monday night when we recorded amazing footage of the green meteor on his dashcam.

Sean uploaded the clip to his Twitter account shortly after, tweeting: "Just caught this on my dashcam outside Banteer, Cork.

"Bright meteor/fireball flashing across the sky. Footage doesn't do it justice, very cool."

According to Astronomy Ireland this sighting was not part of an expected meteor shower.

A spokesman said: "We've had sightings all over the country. From Cork to Clare, Fermanagh to Dublin, Sligo, Galway.

"It wasn’t a firework folks, despite the week that’s in it!

"They don’t make them that big yet. Sounds like a meteor or a fireball.

"Thanks for the reports and keep them coming."

"Meteors are rarely expected. They’re just pieces of rock, or space dust colliding with Earth’s atmosphere and burning up.

"Comets are the ones we can predict."

Hundreds of people across Ireland and the UK took to social media on Monday to discuss the eerie green light in our skies.

One amazed witness tweeted: "Anyone else spot a bright green/blue meteor/space junk burn up over Cork? Facing south towards the airport.

"Came in very low by Frankfield around 6.55 - small parts could have landed in a field somewhere!"

A second user tweeted: "Incredible fireball #meteor to the southwest tonight at 18:55. It was absolutely amazing to see, it lasted about 5 seconds & left a bright green trail"

Another said: "Wow!! METEOR just shot over Dublin just now! At least it looked that way, looking southward from Lusk, through my sitting room window! Anyone else see this!"
