Irish dad who drowned trying to save son in Australia branded a hero

An Irish father has been branded a hero after he died while trying to save his son.

Cassan Cowman jumped into the water after his son slipped into waterfall rapids at a popular tourist destination in south-east Queensland, Australia.

The 49-year-old, who is believed to be from Munster originally, died on January 2nd after the attempted rescue.

Emergency services were called to the location just off Pump Station Road after Mr Cowman failed to resurface after diving into the waterfall just after 2pm.

His son was pulled to safety and taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for observation.

Cassan Cowman (gofundme)

Police divers recovered Mr Cowman's body at Wappa Falls shortly after 6.30pm.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the Cowman family named 'Cowman Family Education'.

It reads: "tragically on the 2nd of January, Cassan Cowman bravely drowned saving his son. He leaves behind his beloved wife Trish and darling children Ormond (11), Ella (9), & Torin (7).

"Ormond, Ella and Torin were the apple of Cass' eye and like any parent he wanted the best for their futures."

It adds: "Please help us honour Cass through raising funds for his children's ongoing education to help ensure they live the lives Cass wanted.

"Cass was charismatic, Irish to a fault, enjoyed a whiskey but at the end of the day ultimately he simply loved his family. He was a devoted family man through and through, working day and night to provide for his family."

It ends with a poem for Mr Cowman which reads: "May the road rise up to meet you Cass, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand."
