Irish customers alerted after popular ice cream recalled from supermarkets

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has issued an urgent recall notice for a batch of Mars Bounty Ice Cream Bars.

The products were recalled due to the presence of an unauthorised pesticide known as ethylene oxide.

Ethylene oxide is not permitted for use in foods sold in the EU but is approved for use by other countries outside the EU.

Although the consumption of the contaminated product does not pose an acute risk to health, there is an increased risk if there is continued consumption of ethylene oxide in contaminated food over a long period of time.

Therefore, exposure to ethylene oxide needs to be minimised.

Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated batch.

The batch code for products affected by this recall notice is 037C3DOE02, and the ice cream will have a best before date of 31/08/2022.

The latest recall notice comes after parents were asked to check their presses for Kinder chocolate products that were recalled amid salmonella fears.

Kinder's parent company Ferrero recalled a list of products due to a number of people who had consumed the products falling ill.

Since the end of January, 15 cases of salmonellosis which form part of this outbreak have been identified in Ireland, primarily in children. The most recent Irish cases became unwell in mid-March.

The majority of people who have become ill in this wider outbreak, have reported eating Kinder products in the days before they became sick.

People were urged to check their homes for the products especially as the Easter weekend approaches.
