Irish Cup final: Ballinamallard Utd captain Richard Clarke voices pride despite defeat

Richard Clarke conceded Crusaders just "had too much" as Ballinamallard United's Irish Cup dream was crushed at Windsor Park.

A sixth-minute header from Jordan Owens was added to by two quick-fire goals at the start of the second half as the Crues ran out comfortable 3-0 winners .

Philip Lowry headed home the second in the 49th minute, and five minutes later substitute Ross Clarke scored with his very first touch.

Crusaders lived up to their short odds - they were 2/7 with the bookmakers - to clinch a fourth Irish Cup for the club.

For Championship underdogs Ballinamallard it was a spirited run to the final that was ultimately undone by the quality of Premiership opposition.

“Overall the cup run has been amazing. It was a bonus for ourselves to get to the final and the cup run has given us momentum in the league," Mallards captain Clarke said afterwards.

“I’m glad we were able to put on a bit of a show for the fans. Crusaders thoroughly deserved it.

“We gave a good account of ourselves but it just wasn’t good enough.

“We conceded goals at the start of the first half and the start of the second half and in the end the Crues just had too much.

“We are disappointed but I am proud of everyone.

“All of Fermanagh came out to get behind us but hopefully we did them proud.

“But now we have to build on this. This club want to be pushing for promotion back to the Premiership next season.”
