Irish Covid restrictions update due as several countries announce strict travel rules

The Irish government is due to issue a list of updated restrictions later on Monday as fear around the arrival of the Omicron variant continues.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly says he believes the new strain could already be on Irish soil - however, only time will tell.

Dr. Tony Holohan issued a warning on Sunday evening around the case numbers and the ongoing dominance of the Delta variant.

He insisted that the public needs to continue to act responsibly and follow current health guidelines at all times in order to slow the fourth surge of Covid.

While Irish travel guidelines are likely to be updated in line with recent discoveries, other countries have jumped quickly to shut their borders and implement new restrictions.

Among the countries to so far introduce new Covid measures are Australia, the UK, Japan, China, Spain, Portugal, France, and Israel.

As more and more Covid cases associated with the new variant 'of concern' raise their heads, more and more leaders are opting to shut borders to slow its entry.

On Saturday, the Australian government reintroduced border restrictions on some countries in southern Africa where Omicron has been detected.

Anyone who has been in these countries and is not an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or immediate family will not be able to enter Australia.

Meanwhile, any Australian citizens, permanent residents, and their immediate family members arriving from these countries will now need to go into “immediate supervised quarantine for 14 days subject to jurisdictional arrangements”.

As for the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that face coverings will become mandatory again in shops and on public transport from next week as part of measures to slow the new variant.

Anyone entering the country - regardless of vaccination status - will have to present a negative PCR test.

In Japan, the government announced today that it will ban all incoming foreign travellers for one month effective from Tuesday in an effort to prevent the variant from spreading domestically.

Anyone arriving into Spain and Portugal will now be required to present a negative Covid-19 test result before boarding the flight - regardless of whether or not you're fully vaccinated or have a booster.

France also moved to ban flights from seven South African regions in light of the recent news and Israel will ban foreigners from entering the country for 14 days from today.
