Irish Covid-19 patient 'went to gym and stylist' after developing symptoms

An Irishwoman who later tested positive for coronavirus visited both the gym and a stylist after developing symptoms, it has emerged.

Dublin-based contact tracer Devisri Sundaram revealed details of one call with a woman in her 20s who had tested positive for Covid-19.

The woman admitted that before getting tested she had developed symptoms including a headache, sore throat, and fatigue, but still dined out at a restaurant, went to the gym and had a long session with a stylist.

Ms Sundaram told The Guardian that members of the public need to "be more responsible" to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

It comes after public health officials advised that Dublin needs to shut pubs and restaurants for indoor dining after a spike in new infections.

The National Public Health Emergency Team sent advice to Cabinet yesterday, and politicians are set to meet to discuss the measures this afternoon.

There has been a backlash to the decision from many quarters, as businesses warned they may not be able to survive further closures.

They also pointed to official figures on outbreaks and clusters, which showed very few had been attributed to restaurants or bars.

However Professor Philip Nolan, who is the chair of NPHET's Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, has said this is "misreading" the data.

He explained that evidence from other countries shows that pubs and restaurants "drive community transmission".

Professor Nolan admitted he understood publicans' concerns and that "livelihoods are at stake", but he warned that without closures the bug will "spiral out of control".
