Irish couple who swapped four hour Dublin commute for life on inhabited Co Kerry Island return home

A young Irish couple who spent the past six months living on an uninhabited Island are on their way home.

Lesley Kehoe and Gordon Bond were tired of Dublin's rat race and were spending four hours commuting from Kildare to the city every day.

In a bid to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, they decided to move to the Great Blasket Islands off the coast of Co Kerry to spend six months managing a hostel.

But their adventure has come to its planned conclusion, with Lesley posting on twitter: "Before we start to load up the boat, we just wanted to say a final thank you.

"Whether you followed from afar, spent an evening on the island or just had a tea in the café, you have been part of what has made this adventure so magical.

"Go raibh míle from the island one last time x"

The couple were the only full-time residents on the island which was abandoned in 1954 due to population decline.

Lesley, 27, and Gordon, 29 have revealed that they were delighted to have the opportunity to manage the hostel - which hosted guests on boat trips out from Dingle, Bantry and Dunquin.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror back in August, Lesley said: “I don’t think either of us are ready to leave the island, it’s become a huge part of our lives and it’s definitely changed us.

"I think living here has shown us what works for us and what doesn’t and this pace of life definitely suits us.

“I don’t see us going back to work in Dublin any time soon.”
