Irish couple in their mid-20s explain how they built their dream home - and the unusual genius saving tip

This is the Irish couple in their mid-20s who built their dream home - and their genius savings tip.

Hazel O'Connor, 26, works as a nurse while partner Paddy is an electrician.

The pair started work on the build in July 2018 before moving in September 2019.

The Laois woman told the Irish Daily Mirror: "We always knew we would build. Renting was never going to be something we would even look into. Thanks to our parents we didn't move out until the build was complete.

"We decided in 2017 to start contacting banks and make a start on saving and we were gifted a site, which is a major help.

"We began our planning process with our friend James who is an architect. He did our drawings and helped with the design stage.

"We submitted our plans in February 2018 and were granted in April 2018. We were so lucky to have our planning granted so quickly as I know a lot of people struggle with this but our architect set up a pre-planning meeting before submitting our plans to ensure all would run smoothly.

"Also from both being from the area, working nearby and with Paddy farming everything seemed to go in our favour."

Hazel admitted the build was "stressful", but that Paddy and her dad served as "joint project managers" to ensure it went off without a hitch.

And she added that the "hidden costs" were one of the biggest shocks of the build, which included unexpected bills for site insurance, water supply, security and council fees.

Hazel explained: "I suppose getting a house built is a stressful process - there is a lot of money involved and you want everything to be 100%.

"We went direct labour which is very time consuming, involves a lot of phone calls, organising different trades, materials for each tradesman and knowing what comes next and having it prepared.

"To be fair both Paddy and my Dad were like joint project managers.

"They both worked so hard and ensured everything went smoothly. We also had a lot of friends in each trade so direct labour worked for us but may not be everyone's cup of tea. We had to rearrange one aspect of the build due to tradesmen cancelling.

"The hidden costs are the big shock, like what you actually spend before you start to build such as site insurance, water supply, security, council fees - to name a few.

"We spent time looking at other houses, designs and what would be suitable for our area. Once we knew how we wanted the outside to look like and what we needed and wanted inside our architect helped us to put both together.

"He designed a home that suited what we wanted but ensured it was practical from a construction, functional and planning point of view.

"Very often you can look at the front of a house as well as the internal plans of a house but to get both to come together in a way that works for you can be challenging.

"I think our drawings changed about six times but who cares once you are happy with the final result."

Hazel explained that the savings process is "so important" to the build, and shared one genius tip to help boost your savings.

She continued: "For a year prior to taking our mortgage we had numerous bank meetings. We basically saved as if we were paying back our mortgage that we hoped to take out. This was achievable as we were not renting.

"Saving is so important - it's proof for the bank you are capable of paying them back! We continue to save as much as we can even now that we are in our home.

"At the moment our next project and goal is the master bathroom so we are doing 10,000 in 100 days- you put the numbers 1-100 in a box and pick a number every day and put away that amount.

"You could even half the number and still have 5,000 at the end of the 100 days! Help to buy is also a great initiative for first-time buyers and builders once you have your mortgage secured."
