Irish community 'totally numbed and devastated' by death of 'exceptional young man', 13, after fall from tree

A local Irish community have been left "totally numbed and utterly devastated" after the death of a 13-year-old boy on Saturday.

Daniel Butler sadly passed away following an incident in a housing estate on the outskirts of Carlow town at around 11am.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene, and Daniel was taken by ambulance to St Luke's Hospital Kilkenny, where he was later pronounced dead.

It is understood that the teen may have fallen from a tree onto concrete.

Daniel will be reposing in Byrne's Funeral Home, Station Road, Carlow, on Tuesday from 7pm to 9pm.

Removal will take place on Wednesday to arrive at the Cathedral of The Assumption, Carlow, for Funeral Mass at 10am. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Carlow.

A funeral notice reads: "Daniel Butler, 7 The Crescent, Castle Oaks, Dublin Road, Carlow, 12th November, 2022, at St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny, following a tragic accident. Age 13, Daniel is the cherished only son of Richard and Iwona, and greatly adored brother of Lucy. He is deeply regretted by his heart-broken grandparents, uncle, aunt, cousins, classmates and staff in Presentation College, friends in Carlow Karate Club, his kind neighbours in Castle Oaks along with extended family and friends in Ireland, Poland, Luxembourg and Jersey."

It added: "The family wish to sincerely thank everyone for their support, kindness and understanding at this most difficult time."

Tributes have poured in from the teen, who was described as an "exceptional young man" who made "a lasting positive impression on all those who were lucky enough to meet him."

Taking to social media, Carlow Town Hurling and Camogie Club said: "Sometimes in life words fail us!

"Tragically, this is one of those occasions.

"As news filtered through yesterday of the tragic and untimely passing of Daniel Butler, our club, our community and our county as a whole are totally numbed and utterly devastated.

"Easily recognisable in his blue shorts and green helmet, Daniel hurled with our club from a very young age, as does his adored sister Lucy.

"Daniel was an exceptional young man who made a lasting positive impression on all those who were lucky enough to meet him.

"To his heartbroken parents Richard and Iwona, his cherished sister Lucy, family, friends, schoolmates and teammates we offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences.

"May Daniel's gentle soul rest in peace, agus ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

Others offered their sympathies to Daniels's family and friends.

They said: "The news of Daniels sad passing has touched the hearts of every parent and Grandparent in Carlow. I pray you find the strength to keep going through this difficult time. May your beautiful boy rest in peace."

A second wrote: "Heartfelt condolences to his dad, mum, sister, friends, extended families on the huge loss of Daniel. Why life is so cruel I really don't think we will ever know. Hold those memories of Daniel so close they will be your sunshine on those dark days but he will help ye through this. May he rest in paradise".
