Irish community 'shocked' by death of 'very friendly' man who was a 'great friend'

A rural Irish community is in mourning following the death of Christopher 'Christy' Leahy.

The talented Roscommon footballer passed away earlier this week.

Described as "very friendly" and "a great friend", Christy played football for Fuerty GAA in Corderryhugh and hurling with Athleague Hurling Club.

Tributes have been pouring in for Christy, who had "a fantastic left foot", following his death.

Fuerty GAA said they were "saddened" by the death.

Their tweet added: "A very talented footballer with a fantastic left foot, Christy was a good clubman and a great friend to many.

"R.I.P. Christy."

St Joseph's GAA club added: "On behalf of all at St Josephs Gaa club we would like to give our Condolences to the Leahy family and Friends of Christy Leahy. A great@fuertygaa clubman and a great Friend to many Rip."

Athleague Hurling Club commented: "The whole community is shocked by the passing of Christy Leahy. A very friendly and sporty lad. Well known as a footballer with Fuerty, Christy also played hurling for Athleague/Tremane underage and for Athleague at senior level. May he now rest in peace."

A number of people also left tributes on Fuerty GAA's Facebook page.

One said: "Heartbreaking news ... deepest sympathy to Christy's family & friends and all in Fuerty GAA Club. May Christy Rest in Peace."

Another posted: "Sincere & deepest sympathies to the Leahy Family & all in Fuerty GAA Club.Every comfort & solace to all.May Christy RIP."

Someone else commented: "Very sad news. Rest in Peace Christy. Sincere sympathies to the Leahy Family."

One other message read: "Heartbreaking news for his family,friends & all in Fuerty Gaa. May he rest in peace."

Christy's funeral takes place at the Church of the Assumption, Fuerty, on Wednesday at 1pm.
