Irish comedy duo Dirt Birds in talks to produce their own Netflix series

Comedy duo Dirt Birds went viral with their parody sketches lampooning the idea of perfect motherhood - and now they’re in talks to produce their own Netflix series.

Former Nualas star, Dubliner Sue Collins, teamed up with Dundalk, Co Louth native Sinead Culbert in 2016 and since then their skits have gone global with fans as far flung as Australia.

Sue told the Irish Mirror: “Dirt Birds is going so well, we’re on Instagram and Facebook and people tune in to see the next sketch, it’s like a little mini series itself, a Netflix show is our next move and we’ve had interest.

“We’ve now got fans from all over the world, people from Australia, UK and America.

“We were trying for years to get stuff made and then we post one sketch and we’re selling out all over the country.”

The Nualas disbanded in January this year and since then the dynamic duo Dirt Birds are on the crest of a wave.

Sue explained: “We originally got picked up by BBC3 for a sitcom, but it didn’t get made but it was a great experience.

“We had all these characters that were ready to go, we posted a sketch in July 2016 which went viral and that launched Dirt Birds as the duo and it took off, and then the fans started asking for the Live Show.

“We never thought of performing live together and we’re now writing our third show and we’re touring our second.”

The proud moms are headlining the Joke Shop at the Vodafone Comedy Festival at the Iveagh Gardens Dublin, Friday July 26th.

Sinead said: “We’re so excited, there’s a fantastic atmosphere at the festival, it’s so chilled out, they bring over loads of European acts too, Americans and English, it’s a great mix, it’s great to be there with your peers.”

The Dirt Birds' self help book is currently in the making and will be out on time for the Christmas Market.

Sinead added: “Similar to our sketches the book is a parody and self help book.

“This idea that you’re on Instagram and your family is amazing, you’ve the BMI of Elle McPherson and the arse of Jennifer Lopez and the culinary skills of Nigella.

“It sends women over the edge, the pressure to be perfect.

“It’s hitting on everything relatable as a female in modern society, all the stresses, all the strains, all the bullshit.

“The myths on dieting and how unsuccessful we all are at it, running a house, having a full time job.

“We feel our job as comedians is to laugh at the mundanity, the things that drive moms crazy, you know what to do with the kids for the summer or you’re stressed out because you look like a bag of shite.

“The success of Dirt Birds is that women are seeing their own lives playing out in front of them.”
