Irish comedian Justine Stafford sums up Dublin rental crisis in blunt tweet as prices continue to rise

It is extremely difficult to find a decent place to rent in Ireland for a good price these days.

A recent report from Daft.ie found that rents are rising country wide.

It was revealed recently that tenants here spend on average 36% of their net income on rent and some in the capital hand over half their wages to their landlord.

A survey by the Residential Tenancies Board showing half of Ireland’s tenants spend more than 30% of their take home pay on rent - a shocking statistic.

Renters in South Co Dublin are paying on average €2,244 a month which is the most expensive rent in the country.

Even getting a place in the city centre will set you back on average €1,985 a month.

Justine Stafford summed it all up rather bluntly when she tweeted on Sunday about her struggles.

The comedian said: "looking at apartments to rent in dublin again (god help me) and now bedrooms that are not in the same room as the kitchen are being advertised as “contains separate bedroom!” as if this is some kind of luxury feature to not sleep beside your oven!"

South Dublin city renters are paying €2,137 while renters in the city centre are paying on average €1,985 a month. Rent in North Dublin city is €1,980.

Rents in Dublin are increasing every year, and are on average 0.5% higher this year compared to the second quarter of 2020.

However, elsewhere in Ireland rents are also increasing, typically at double-digit rates.

In the greater Dublin area some tenants are paying almost two thirds of their salary in rent.

12% of those who rent are handing over more than half their income to landlords and many of these are international wealth funds which pay little or no tax.
