Irish coffee recipe perfect for St Patrick's Day

An Irish coffee is the perfect treat to enjoy on St Patrick's Day.

You only need four ingredients and it's a great after dinner option for those who have a sweet tooth.

The Spruce Eats have shared a recipe created in Ireland in the early 1940s by Joe Sheridan, a chef at Foynes Port near Limerick.

Choose a good quality Irish whiskey and give this Irish favourite a try to celebrate St Patrick's Day at home.

Ingredients

1 to 2 teaspoons brown sugar (to taste)

4 ounces coffee (strong, rich, hot)

1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey

1 ounce heavy cream (lightly whipped)

Method

1. Place the brown sugar into a warm Irish coffee glass, mug, or other heatproof glass.

2. Add the coffee and Irish whiskey.

3. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.

4. Float the lightly whipped heavy cream on top by slowly pouring it over the back of a spoon.

5. Do not stir. Instead, drink the Irish coffee through the cream.

The Spruce Eat's top tips for perfecting your Irish Coffee.

  • To really experience an authentic Irish coffee, you want a rich, strong coffee.

  • Don't forget to preheat your glass as it keeps the drink warm and helps marry the ingredients. While the coffee is brewing, pour hot water into the glass and pour it out before making the drink.

  • Use freshly whipped cream. Avoid cans of cream or whipped topping as those will ruin the Irish coffee.
