Irish Coast Guard in Co Sligo rescue two surfers during Storm Jorge

Two surfers were rescued by the Irish Coast Guard team in Co Sligo after getting into difficulty during Storm Jorge.

It came after a Met Eireann Status Orange wind warning was issued for the area throughout Saturday, with 130km/h winds expected.

The alert was in place for Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo and began at 12 noon yesterday, lasting until 3am on Sunday.

It read: "Some severe winds expected during Saturday associated with Storm Jorge.

"Southwest quickly veering west and later northwest will reach mean speeds of 65 to 80km/h with gusts of 110 to 130km/h, possibly higher in very exposed areas with an elevated risk of coastal flooding."

And the Irish Coast Guard has revealed they were called into action to help save two surfers during the storm.

Both of those rescued were then handed to ambulance medics for assessment.

A Coast Guard spokesman wrote on Twitter: "Irish Coast Guard Sligo Helicopter has rescued 2 surfers that got into difficulties today.

"Casualties were successfully recovered and handed over the National Ambulance Service.

"We strongly advice the public to avoid coastal activities during storm conditions."
