Irish Coast Guard called to Dalkey Island after Chinese lanterns mistaken for emergency flares

A set of Chinese lanterns released in south Dublin were mistaken for emergency flares prompting an emergency call to the Irish Coast Guard.

The Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard were called after four of the lanterns were mistaken for the flares around Dalkey Island - with a PAN PAN also issued to nearby vessels.

But it turned out to be a false alarm, potentially pulling the Coast Guard away from another emergency call and wasting valuable time and resources.

Permission must be granted by the Irish Aviation Authority to release Chinese lanterns.

Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard said: "Reports of 4 flares set off in or around Dalkey Island. Team sent to investigate, with Dublin MRCC issuing a PAN PAN for any vessels in the area to assist with the sighting of the flares.

"On arrival to the scene, local walkers in the area confirmed seeing Chinese lanterns been set off in the area. The crew kept a watch of the area before standing down and returning to base. PAN PAN cancelled.

"Remember if you see someone in difficulty, in or near the water, dial 112/999 or call VHF channel 16 immediately and speak to the Coast Guard."
