Irish CNN star Donie O'Sullivan goes viral after Trump supporter gives outrageous reply to question

Ireland's favourite CNN journalist Donie O'Sullivan is no stranger to difficult interviews and volatile situations while reporting in the US.

He rose to prominence among the Irish public in January after he was praised as a hero for his coverage of the Capitol riots in Washington DC.

The Kerry native became an overnight celebrity here after he was seen bravely broadcasting from the middle of the dangerous scenes.

Donie had continued to cover misinformation, conspiracy theorists and supporters of former President Donald Trump in the months since.

He was reporting on the ground again over the weekend, this time from a Trump rally in Ohio.

Among the people he interviewed was a man dressed as a medieval jouster.

However, the most innocent of questions was enough to draw ire from one man hoping to 'Make America Great Again'.

In a six-second clip posted to his Twitter account, Donie asks a MAGA hat-wearing man what his name was, and the response has gone viral.

Donie earnestly asks, "What's your name, sir?" To which the guy replies, "My name is go f*** yourself."

Undeterred, the CNN reporter continues, "Are you from Ohio?", which is met this time by a simple "no".

The post, captioned, 'It's the friends we meet along the way', has been viewed more than 1.7 million times since it was posted on Sunday.

Piers Morgan was among the first to react, sharing a series of laughing emojis, while Doireann Garrihy said she was "dying" over the clip.

Even the Embassy of Ireland in the US got involved, replying: "As Yeats had it, there are no strangers here, Donie, only friends you haven't yet met..."

Another person on Twitter said on the interviewee's expletive-laden response, "His mama must have loved him to give him a name like that".

Others praised Donie for his "dogged professionalism", while others added he is "the best thing to come out of Kerry since Maurice Fitzgerald's absurdly brilliant sideline point against Dublin".
