Irish chaser Darragh Ennis tells who is the most competitive and how much study is needed for show

Irish chaser Darragh Ennis says that his co-star Mark Labbett is the "most competitive person" as he spoke about rivalry among the show's quizmasters.

Darragh is also known as the Menace on the popular TV show the Chase.

The Dubliner, 47, went through a tough recruitment process, which saw him interviewed and quizzed for four years before being given the role late last year.

But maintaining in the highly coveted hot seat is no easy task either, and Darragh revealed the chasers are always training behind the scenes to sharpen their range of knowledge.

The Irish college professor explained that Mark Labbett isn't a keen loser.

Speaking on Tuesday's Six O'Clock Show, he said: "It's very supportive but there's one thing you have to really understand.

"Any group that contains Mark Labbett is going to be competitive.

"That man is the most competitive person I have ever known, it's ridiculous.

"It's all in the spur of the moment, he gets caught up in it.

"He's a lovely fella outside, he's really nice but he does not want to lose ever. He's a really bad loser."

He also said: "Mark keeps a really big wide exhaustive statistic list of how much we answer, how quickly we answer, all that stuff.

"He has a huge spreadsheet and he keeps control of it all the time and he keeps us updated."

Darragh, who had five million people tune in to watch his debut on the game show in November, has to put in the work to stay sharp.

He said: "I'm a good quizzer but I'm in no way near the best.

"I'm in a quiz league in Oxford and I'm in a mid-table team but if you put the people in the top on camera, they may well freeze.

"I'm on four different quiz teams, I study every night, I read a lot of books, I learn a lot of lists. We all do, we all work really really hard."

Darragh recently explained to fans where he was and told them he hasn't been fired.

Fans speculated about his absence from the programme.

Chaser Darragh Ennis tweeted: "Sigh. I've not been sacked.

"The nature of random scheduling means sometimes we don't have a show air for a little while, and sometimes we're on 2 or 3 times in a week."

His comment came after fans worried The Menace had been ditched, noting he was not on the show "yet again".

The Irish quizmaster joined fellow Chasers Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett, Shaun ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Wallace, Anne ‘The Governess’ Hegerty, Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha and Jenny ‘The Vixen’ Ryan.

Darragh was previously a contestant himself where he impressed with his general knowledge.

Outside of being excellent at quizzes, he is a postdoctoral researcher at Oxford University - specialising in the study of the brains of insects.
