An Irish boy is fighting for his life in Spain after being found unconscious in a swimming pool.
James Greene, 3, was with his grandparents at an apartment complex in Cabo Roig, near Alicante.
The youngster was found shortly after 8am on Monday by a passersby, reportedly floating face down in the swimming pool.
A call was received just after 8am saying a child had fallen into a swimming pool and had been pulled out, but was unconscious.
A local confirmed to the Irish Mirror that the boy was spotted by neighbours who pulled him from the water and alerted emergency services.
Local Police from Orihuela were first on the scene.
The source added: “They were working on him for two hours before transferring him to the hospital in Alicante.
“It’s shocking, but emergency services were great.”
It is believed that the youngster’s grandparents were eating breakfast in their villa nearby when the accident occurred.
The boy was on holidays with his family and is believed to have strong Cork connections.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it “is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance”.
The community pool, which is near a number of holiday homes, does have a life guard but Spanish news outlets report that the incident happened before a lifeguard came on shift.
The accident comes just a week after tragic Mikey Leddy, 15, lost his life on the Spanish island of Lanzarote.
The teen, from Navan in Co Meath, is believed to have suffered a serious head injury after falling from a wall early on Monday morning in Puerto del Carmen.
He was transferred to hospital where he later died.
