Irish boxer Joe Ward's professional debut ended by freak injury

Irish boxer Joe Ward suffered a nightmare professional debut in the early hours of the morning after a freak knee injury forced him to retire mid-fight.

The former Olympian, who turned professional in August, suffered the injury to his left knee as he stepped back to avoid a punch from opponent Marco Delgado in the second round of the light heavyweight bout.

The 25-year-old was left writhing in pain on the canvas as the medical team examined him before he was forced to concede the fight - with the referee awarding Delgado a TKO win.

The amateur star is reportedly not looking at a lengthly spell outside the ring after the Madison Square Garden bow, with the reports indicating that the injury was a dislocated kneecap.
