Irish boxer Emmet Brennan loses out in Olympics light-heavyweight bout

Irish boxer Emmet Brennan has fallen at the Round of 32 hurdle after defeat against Dilshodbek Ruzmetov of Uzbekistan.

The Dubliner finished the fight in brilliant fashion with some wonderful left jabs connecting, but it was what was needed after Ruzmetov had had the lion's share of the opening two rounds.

Ruzmetov was the winner by unanimous decision and is many people's fancy for the gold medal in this category.

The Uzbekistan fighter opened proceedings very aggressively and had Brennan struggling for parts of the first round.

The fight got somewhat scrappy for a period, with both fighters grasping each other and flailing aimless punches in frustration before the referee separated them.

Ultimately, Ruzmetov was a strong opponent and Brennan was very impressive in providing resistance to a strong gold medal contender.

In an interview with Emmet Brennan after the fight, RTÉ's Des Cahill alluded to the long road Brennan negotiated to get to the Olympics; this included working part time, training full time and taking out a credit union loan to make the Olympic dream possible.

A tearful Brennan acknowledged the achievement of getting there, but was clearly disappointed his journey had ended.

There were bound to be further tears back at home in Ireland as the Dubliner did the whole nation proud.
