A former Irish Army Ranger has shared some simple tips to avoid thieves this Christmas.
Home security expert Leo Harris has created a handbook outlining the straightforward ways you can protect your home over the festive season.
Private security firm Manguard Plus aims to equip people with the basic principles of security, helping to reduce the chances of burglars raiding your home this year.
General Manager Jonathan Pim explained: "While we have very large corporate clients whose security needs are undoubtedly very specific, there is a common thread that runs across all professional security advice; that is awareness and prevention.
"Really, simple things done well are hugely effective.
"Situational awareness is critical and that simply means being aware of your surroundings."

Go outside your home and try and think about how you would get in if you were locked out. This has the effect of getting you to think about how others see your home and how easy it is to access it
All homes should be fitted with an intruder alarm which should be monitored by a recognised monitoring station
Attention should be paid to any balcony or window near an adjoining roof
Leave on lights. This is very effective. Also, you can buy timers in any suitable hardware shops and time your lights to come on once darkness falls.
Invest in motion sensor lights
Simple locks are highly effective
Ensure all doors are locked
Draw Curtains or blinds
Leave on a radio, and
Hide valuables; don’t have them on show.
