The Irish Almanac has been responsible for predicting more major world events than the Simpsons, and in 2020, it scarily predicted the coronavirus pandemic, a global recession and Donald Trump losing the White House for the following year.
At over 250 years old, the Old Moore’s Almanac has some of its earliest copies residing in the Long Room Library of Trinity College Dublin.
Recent news coverage, such as violence and unrest in Belfast and the Johnson and Johnson single dose vaccine, have shown the events of 2021 coming true as planned.
This year, the almanac has predicted these few things already.
- Micheal Martin faces a leadership challenge - maybe not from within his own party but people still call Leo Varadkar Taoiseach.
- Housing is a huge issue once again - no surprises there.
- Trump becomes less relevant and spends the next few years desperately trying to avoid prison - the former US leader has never been as quiet with all his social media deactivated.
- Low vaccine uptake in Europe and the U.S. threatens the pandemic recovery effort - uptake might not be the problem, but instead supply.
- Anti-vaccine protests are countered by opposing sides demanding mandatory vaccination - we've already seen plenty of backlash against this worldwide.
- Light at the end of the tunnel for long-Covid sufferers as researchers make new discoveries - the vaccines have already shown positive effects on those with long-Covid.
- A government sponsored kidnapping makes the news - stories of Princess Latifa’s kidnapping in Dubai have been regular news items throughout the month of February, with footage showing the princess saying commandos drugged her as she fled by boat and flew her back to detention.
- Nostalgia is big in 2021 as we crave a return to simpler times - Reeling in the Years returns this weekend!

With an impressive sample of events that the Almanac has predicted pretty closely, here are some of the events that have yet to happen this year, and if they come true, Ireland is in for a scorching summer.
- Drought likely in May or June as the country(Ireland) sizzles.
- Pregnancy announcements from Lily Allen and Khloe Kardashian.
- Wedding bells for Taylor Swift and Paris Hilton.
- Winter 2021/2022 is a stormy one for Europe, with less snow than usual.
- Following the Scottish elections, v seeks a referendum on independence, but her plans hit a stumbling block.
- A freak weather event in Italy.
- A tense stand-off in the Baltic region, war is narrowly avoided.
- An unfortunate accident in the South China Sea threatens the stability of the region.
