IRFU unhappy Government have left decision to call off Ireland vs Italy in their hands

IRFU bosses are unhappy that the decision on whether to postpone Ireland's Six Nations clash with Italy has been left in their hands by the Irish Government.

Speaking ahead of an emergency meeting this lunchtime with Minister for Health Simon Harris, IRFU chief executive Philip Browne commented that it was unfair that the Government wasn't taking the initiative and making the decision.

Minister Harris said earlier today that he had only recommended to the IRFU that the game be called off due to coronavirus fears and for public health safety.

The northern region of Italy was last night put on the affected regions list by the National Public Heath Emergency Team.

Arriving for the meeting with the Minister, Browne commented: "I think we're looking a directive on this.

"At the end of the day, the Government are here to lead the country, and to lead the country in relation to public health decisions, and I think it's somewhat unfair to be asking the IRFU to be making decisions like this.

"I think ultimately we will comply with whatever directive we're given.

"Yeah, I don't have anything to comment on that at the moment. But I think at this stage we're going in to talk to the Minister, and we're happy to do so".
