Ireland Women’s team win gold at the 2019 European Ultimate Frisbee Championships

The Ireland Women’s team won gold at the 2019 European Ultimate Frisbee Championships last weekend.

It was the first time an Irish team have won gold at an international tournament after they beat Switzerland 15-8 in the finale.

It capped a gruelling week-long tournament in Gyor, Hungary for the 21-woman squad who saw off 14 other nations in temperatures reaching 37 degrees.

Ireland were seeded 11th in the rankings, but having lost to reigning champions Finland in the pools stages, they got revenge in a nail-biting quarter-final.

Pre-tournament favourites Russian were then dispatched in the last four before they saw off the Swiss in the final.

The squad captained by Sarah Melvin, coached by Ian French and assistant coaches Jen Kwan, Michelle Leahy and Zoë Langsdale, produced on the biggest stage in what is a thriving sport in Ireland.

You can watch the final, which was streamed live to Ultimate fans and supporters across the world, right here .
