Ireland women's boss Vera Pauw shows support for Black Lives Matter in powerful message

Republic of Ireland women's manager Vera Pauw has shared a powerful anti-racism message, urging people to listen to what black communities have to say about their treatment.

One of the most important lessons Pauw learned while South Africa women's manager was that racism is still prominent in society.

The Dutch coach was in charge of the country between 2014 and 2016, and says that she learned that the reason she's never experienced racial prejudice was because she's white.

The death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody last week, has sparked protests and riots across the US while people have joined anti-racism protests across the world.

She said: "The most important lesson I learned during my time as National Coach of South Africa is that the only reason why I can say 'I do not see colour' is because I am white.

"I learned to listen and to see."

In the video shared, activist Jane Elliott asks a group of white people if any of them would want to be treated in the same way as black citizens are at the time.

When nobody stands, Elliott questions why they're okay with accepting that others are treated differently based on  their skin colour.

It comes after hundreds of protesters gathered outside the GPO in Dublin today in solidarity with American protesters fighting for justice.

Protesters were seen wearing face coverings due to COVID-19 as they held anti-racism posters before marching down O'Connell Street.

Chants of "Say the name, George Floyd" and "Black Lives Matter" were belted out by the activists during the peaceful protest.
