Ireland winger Jacob Stockdale wants to emulate Japan hat-trick hero

Jacob Stockdale would love to follow in the footsteps of the first hat-trick scoring winger of this World Cup.

Kotaro Matsushima bagged three tries in host nation Japan's opening win in the tournament curtain raiser against Russia in Tokyo yesterday.

Ireland face the Brave Blossoms in Shizuoka next Saturday, but before that they have the small matter of their Pool A opener against Six Nations rivals Scotland in Yokohama tomorrow.

The prolific Stockdale has previous with Matsushima and knows can cause damage - and admits it would be a dream to emulate his try-scoring feats on the world stage.

"Playing against him two years ago was my second Test, he's a serious handful," said the Ulsterman, referring to Ireland's 2017 summer tour.

"He's got good gas, he doesn't look that big but he's very strong.

"He took his tries very well last night and was probably unlucky not to get a fourth.

"That's exactly how you'd like it to go as a winger for your first game in the World Cup.

"He's dangerous so next week I'll definitely have to take a look at him and work out how to defend against him."

Stockdale is excited to get the opportunity to play in a back three unit making it's World Cup debut.

With Rob Kearney and Keith Earls missing out through injury, Andrew Conway and full-back Jordan Larmour join Stockdale in what is an attack-minded trio.

"I think our preparation's been very good," said Stockdale.

"Obviously it's a loss not to have Rob and Earlsy, as they are so experienced.

"But Andrew Conway and Jordan Larmour have played a lot of rugby for Ireland, and I've played a fair bit of rugby with them.

"They are both exciting players to get to play with.

"They want to get onto the ball and attack, so as a winger that's very exciting."

The young try machine has loved the build-up to the tournament, even though Ireland have been in camp since mid-June

"When the pre-season started you thought it's going to be an age but it's come around very quickly.

"The buzz around the World Cup in general, it's a weird feeling to see it kick off and that it's finally started.

"You can get a lot of messages, there's a lot of buzz from home with people saying they are looking forward to watching it".
