Ireland win silver medal in 4x200m women's relay at World Athletics Relays

The Ireland women's 4x200m relay team picked up a sensational silver medal at the World Athletics Relays in Poland.

The foursome of Aoife Lynch, Kate Doherty, Sarah Quinn and Sophie Becker recorded a time of 1:35.93, a new national record.

And it was enough to finish second and secure a silver medal as Poland took first place in 1:34.98 (NR), with Ecuador 1:36.86 (SB) back in third.

“I felt at home out there, it was phenomenal. Just buzzing,” Lynch told Cathal Dennehy afterwards, with Quinn adding: “We had nothing to lose and everything to gain, and we just gave it our all.”

Becker concluded: “Just delighted. I’m so happy for us.”

Meanwhile, the mixed 4x400m team of Chris O'Donnell, Phil Healy, Sharlene Mawdsley, and Andrew Mellon finished in 7th place in their final.

The team secured Olympic qualification yesterday, but were without Thomas Barr for the final as Mellon subbed in for the Waterford native.
