Ireland 'well capable of sustaining payment programme' for Covid-19, Minister of State Patrick O'Donovan says

Ireland is "well capable of sustaining the payment programme" in place during the coronavirus pandemic, a Minister has said.

Plans such as the Wage Subsidy Scheme and the Covid-19 welfare payment have been set up to help businesses and people out of work during the crisis.

And Minister of State at the Department of Finance Patrick O'Donovan believes the country is in a good place financially going forward.

It comes after Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe's comments that the Government will consider changing payment when the initial timeframe runs out in June.

Mr O'Donovan said: "Decisions that the government made in making sure our finances were sound, and brought in measures that were identified as Brexit measures in the event of no deal Brexit, have now led to a situation where we are able to borrow."

Speaking to Sean O'Rourke on RTE Radio 1, Mr O'Donovan added: "The reality is that the quicker we are able to make sure that the linkages between people at work and the sustainability of that, while taking advice from public health and allowing the economy to gradually begin to awaken again will allow us to get through a situation where the Department of Finance forecast that we will get the situation more under control next year."

He confirmed that the measures introduced will mean Ireland will run a deficit of about €23billion at the end of this year, after acknowledging the number of those unemployed "ballooned overnight".

Ireland is considered a rich country under EU definitions.
