Ireland weather: Winter chill to blast country as Met Eireann warn of 'much cooler conditions'

Ireland is set to be hit by "much cooler conditions" next week as December gets off to a chilly start.

Temperatures are set to pick up over the weekend after a freezing night but will drop again from next Wednesday.

Exact details remain unclear but Met Eireann is warning that the winter chill is on the way.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Current indications suggest little change to start Wednesday, but there's a signal for much colder conditions to end the week."

More details will be released in the coming days as just how cold it is set to be becomes clear.

As for the here and now, a pleasant weekend is in store but with the odd shower.

The forecaster added: "Cloudy in many areas to begin the day with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, mainly in the southern half of the country.

"Becoming mostly dry in the afternoon and brightening up in places. Highest temperatures of 7 to 12 degrees, coolest in west Connacht and Ulster, with a light to moderate easterly breeze.

"The outlook for Saturday night is for rather cloudy conditions to continue, with patchy rain at times in the northwest of the country. Otherwise, it will be mainly dry. Temperatures through the night will remain unchanged or even rise a little, generally between 6 and 8 degrees in light easterly winds.

"On Sunday there'll be isolated showers, but overall a dry day with cloudy conditions prevailing. Temperatures will be between 9 and 11 degrees with light variable winds. Temperatures will fall overnight to between 3 and 5 degrees."
