Ireland weather: Wind warnings in place for three counties ahead of gusts up to 100km/h

Three counties are under Status Yellow wind warnings tonight as gusts of up to 100km/h are set to lash the west and northwest.

Met Eireann issued a warning for Mayo earlier this evening which came into effect at 4pm and expires at 1am.

A forecaster cautioned: "Becoming very windy this evening and for a time tonight with some heavy rain and a risk of spot flooding. South to southwest winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h, gusting up to 100km/h, strongest in coastal areas.

A separate Status Yellow wind alert is in place for Donegal and Galway.

Met Eireann says it will be in place until 1am this morning.

And Donegal has also been hit with a 24-hour Status Yellow rainfall warning in place from noon on Saturday until noon on Sunday.

However, much better weather is on the way tomorrow.

A forecaster said: "Sunday morning will start off cloudy with some patchy drizzle near western coasts. It will brighten up in most areas during the afternoon, with warm, sunny spells developing.

"However, low cloud may linger near some southern and western coasts. Breezy at first with fresh and gusty southwesterly winds, strong near coasts in the west and north, but winds will ease later. Highest temperatures of 17C to 22C, warmest in north Munster and north Leinster."

Monday and Tuesday will be slightly more mixed, but temperatures are set to remain high.

The spokesman added: "Cloudy and humid with outbreaks of rain, mainly over the western half of the country.

"Some heavy downpours will be possible. Highest temperatures of 18C to 21C with light to moderate southeasterly winds.

"Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and limited bright or sunny periods. Showers will be most frequent in western areas.

"Staying quite warm in a light southerly breeze, with top temperatures of 18C to 22C."
