Ireland weather today: Two counties to hit 30C mark but here's when thunderstorms will barrel in

Two counties are forecast to hit the 30C mark as Ireland gears up for the hottest day of the year.

The majority of areas will be in the late 20s but Laois and Carlow are currently forecast to be the hottest in the country.

According to Met Eireann, Carlow Town will see the mercury peak at 3pm at around 32C while it will be a roasting 30C in Portlaoise from 3pm to 4pm.

The midlands and east of the country will be warmest while the west will be slightly cooler with Kerry for example having around only having highs of 20C.

However thunderstorms will barrel in at around 4pm today with Met Eireann issuing a Status yellow warning for the entire country.

A forecaster said: "Heavy thunderstorms are expected to develop later on Thursday and Thursday night with some severe downpours, hail and spot flooding.

"Due to the localised nature of thunderstorms some parts of the country will remain dry."

Thunderstorms are unpredictable and hard to forecast so it's unclear which counties will get drenched and which will avoid them altogether.

Thursday

"Today will be dry and warm with sunny spells. As the heat builds through the day there's a risk of thunderstorms developing towards evening. Afternoon temperatures generally between 22C and 25C are expected to reach as high as 28C in Leinster and Ulster. Winds will be light, northerly or variable in direction.

"The risk of thunderstorms continues through tonight with Ulster most at risk. While many places will stay dry throughout, where thunderstorms do occur there's a risk of spot flooding and hail. Lowest temperatures will be between 11C and 14C in the west and south of the country and will stay as high 17C or 18C through the night in Leinster and Ulster. Winds will continue light and variable in direction."
