Ireland weather today: Sunny and cool weekend ahead before rain returns next week

Dubliners will wake up this morning to the thankful sight of a dry and sunny weekend.

Saturday's forecast from Met Eireann says it'll be mostly cloudy and dry today, with some bright or sunny breaks.

The odd spot of drizzle is possible during the day. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees in light northwesterly breezes.

Tonight brings mostly dry weather as well with a mix of cloud and clear spells tonight, though some patches of mist or drizzle are possible. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 6 degrees in light northwesterly breezes.

And Sunday will also be dry and cool, with some good sunny spells developing. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees in a light northwesterly breeze.

The optimism fades, however, as we look forward into next week:

Monday: A good deal of cloud on Monday with some bright and sunny spells breaking through. Outbreaks of drizzle will occur, mainly over Ulster and Connacht. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees in mainly light southwesterly breezes, fresher on northern and northwestern coasts.

Monday night: Light outbreaks of rain or drizzle will feed in to the southwest and west overnight, but holding mainly dry elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees with mainly light to moderate southerly winds.

Tuesday: Light outbreaks of rain and drizzle will gradually extend further inland but there will still be a good deal of dry weather with bright and sunny spells during the day. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees in light to moderate southwest winds, strong at times on western and northwestern coasts. During the evening, a band of rain will slowly move into western coastal counties.

Tuesday night: Rain will slowly edge further inland, with much of Leinster and Munster holding dry during the night. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees in light to moderate southwesterly winds, fresher on Atlantic coasts.

Wednesday : The band of rain will continue to track southeastwards during the day, breaking up and becoming lighter as it does so. Good sunshine will follow in behind as the rain clears. Highest temperatures of 8 to 13 degrees in light to moderate west to southwest breezes. Becoming mainly dry for the night with a touch of frost in places.

Further outlook: Turning slightly cooler for the rest of the week with some frosts at night. Rather unsettled with rain and showers. Breezy at times too.
