Ireland weather today: Met Eireann's surprise prediction as new 'high pressure' trend emerges

We're nearly in March – but Ireland is set for more freezing conditions this weekend.

Temperatures will plunge right down to zero – and below – over the coming days, despite a period of high pressure that Met Eireann promises will bring "dry and calm" weather.

Night owls will be shuddering this morning amid a minus-one prediction that's in place for next Monday.

The weekend will prove an event of opposites, as settled days give way to freezing nights.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday night will all bring conditions that can charitably be described as perishing – meaning night-time walkers will need to wrap up warm against the chill.

The days, though, will bring mild conditions for the most part – with dry weather and even some precious rays of sunshine across the country.

Between cloud and sunny spells, things will probably remain relatively pleasant across mornings and afternoons before the mercury dives at night.

Mist, frost and fog are all likely to descend overnight.

Here's Met Eireann's forecast for the coming days:

Friday

Any frost, mist and fog will clear quickly this morning to leave a largely dry day with sunny spells.

Increasing cloud amounts this afternoon may produce a light shower or two in the west.

Thickening cloud in the west towards evening will bring outbreaks of rain and drizzle to Atlantic coastal counties after dark.

Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees. Moderate southerly winds, will strengthen on western coasts this afternoon.

Friday night

Outbreaks of rain and drizzle in Atlantic coastal counties early tonight, will push eastwards overnight and become patchy.

Light to moderate southwest breezes will be fresh near western coasts for a time.

Lowest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees generally, but down to 2 or 3 degrees locally in south Leinster.

Saturday

Saturday will bring a mix of cloud and bright or sunny spells.

It will be cloudier across parts of Munster and south Leinster with patchy light rain or showers, but amounts will be small.

Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in light southerly or variable breezes.

Saturday night

Patchy cloud and clear spells with isolated showers.

Lows of 0 to 5 degrees will produce a slight frost in some parts.

Winds will be light variable or near calm allowing mist and fog patches to form, with fog becoming dense in places towards dawn.

Sunday

Mist and fog patches may be slow clear on Sunday morning in the near calm conditions, but sunny spells will break through in most places by the afternoon.

Dry with highs of 9 to 11 degrees with light easterly breezes developing.

Sunday night

Dry with clear spells. Mist and fog patches will return with a few pockets of dense fog occurring towards dawn.

Lows of 1 to 4 degrees in light easterly breezes.

Monday

Mist and fog will clear through the morning to leave another dry day with variable cloud and some sunshine.

Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in light or moderate easterly breezes.

Monday night

Staying dry with clear spells with patchy frost and fog developing.

Lowest temperatures of -1 to + 3 degrees, but a little less cold across Munster under thicker cloud. Light easterly or variable breezes.
