Ireland weather today: Met Eireann predicts more snowfall in two areas as freezing ice warning issued to four counties

Parts of Leinster and Munster are likely to see yet more snowfall today amid a cold snap that's refusing to give up across the country.

And four counties in the North – Antrim, Armagh, Down and Derry – are under a Status Yellow ice warning this morning, prompting fears that travel may be "difficult" at best.

Met Eireann says showers of rain, hail, sleet and even snow will hit two of the provinces for much of the day.

And things aren't showing any real sign of warming up any time soon, with temperatures set to hit rock bottom and keep going overnight.

Lowest temperatures later on this evening could reach a chilling minus six degrees in parts of Ulster and Connacht – showing no part of the country is being left untouched by the icy conditions.

And during the day the high point conditions-wise will be four degrees.

Met Eireann's forecast for today reads: "Very cold today with frost and ice clearing very slowly, and persisting in some parts for much of the day.

"Generally dry though, with sunny spells, however, showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow will continue to affect parts of Leinster and east Munster.

"Daytime highs of just 1 to 4 degrees, but less cold along eastern coasts in light to moderate north to northeast breezes."

Overnight, the national forecaster adds: "Bitterly cold tonight with widespread severe frost and ice.

"While most areas will be dry with clear spells, scattered wintry showers of hail, sleet or snow will affect eastern and southeastern counties.

"Lows of -1 to -3 degrees through much of Munster and Leinster, and getting down to -5 or -6 degrees in parts of Ulster and Connacht. Winds will be light northerly or variable."
