Ireland weather today: Met Eireann names the areas where snow will hit today as freezing blast continues

Parts of two provinces – Munster and Leinster – could be hit by snow today as Ireland battles an ongoing cold snap.

Met Eireann is predicting that most parts of the country will be hit with frost and ice this morning, before a slow thawing out sees temperatures rise in most places.

But Munster and Leinster will stay cloudier, with wintry showers – featuring rain, hail, sleet or even snow – set to hit.

And the mercury is set to take another nosedive later tonight, with lowest temperatures likely to plummet as low as minus four degrees in some parts of the country.

The national forecaster is warning of "widespread severe frost" in many areas amid a spell of weather as cold as we've seen over recent months.

While most areas will stay dry, snow showers are possible in parts of the east, south-west and midlands.

Met Eireann's daily forecast reads: "Frost and ice in most parts of Ireland early this morning.

"Today, the frost and ice will clear very slowly and will linger in some areas. Most places dry with sunny spells.

"Cloudier in parts of Leinster and east Munster with wintry showers of rain, hail, sleet or snow.

"Highest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees with moderate northeast winds.

"Tonight will be very cold with clear spells and widespread severe frost with ice in many areas as temperatures fall to between -4 and +1 degrees, coldest in Connacht and Ulster. Most areas dry.

"But showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow will continue to affect parts of Leinster and Munster."

The forecast comes after predictions of a Sudden Stratospheric Warming in the coming week – the same event responsible for the Best from the East in 2018.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather said last week: "A Sudden Stratospheric Warming event looks more likely now. As usual what impact this will have on our weather remains to be seen."
