Ireland weather: Thundery downpours forecast this week as two areas bear the brunt of low pressure system

Met Eireann has forecast a grim start to this week as a low-pressure system moves in and brings with it thundery downpours in some areas.

Monday will mark the wet start to the week with showery rain in many areas - which is due to be heavy in places.

Throughout the morning and early afternoon, the rain will clear northwards as sunny spells and scattered showers take form.

Some of these will remain heavy with the potential for localised thundery downpours, but it will be a humid day overall with highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees.

Monday night will become drier with clear spells early on as many showers ease. However, it will quickly turn cloudier from the south with outbreaks of rain spreading northwards over the country.

The Irish forecaster predicts it “becoming blustery as the rain spreads with moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds developing.”

On Tuesday, outbreaks of rain will clear northwards on Tuesday morning but another spell of rain will quickly follow from the south.

This rain will become widespread and heavy through the afternoon and evening with highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees in moderate to fresh southerly winds.

Rain will clear northwards early on Tuesday night, with clear spells developing. However, showery outbreaks of rain will spread from the south again overnight before clearing towards the morning.

Wednesday will see a largely dry start with sunny spells and just a few showers but the rain will spread northwards across the country through the afternoon and evening with some heavy downpours possible.

Rain will become patchier on Wednesday night, with clear spells developing and lowest temperatures ranging from 8 to 11 degrees.

A mix of sunny spells and scattered showers are due on Thursday, with showers most frequent and occasionally heavy over the western half of the country.

Met Eireann then states that “Further spells of rain and showers are expected on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures remaining in the mid-teens.”
