Ireland weather: Thunderstorms set to hit despite rise in temperatures

Ireland will be hit by warm temperatures today despite thunderstorms arriving tonight.

Heavy rain and thunder showers will batter the country as temperatures hit 19C.

Meanwhile, Sunday is expected to see several heavy showers throughout the afternoon.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: "Sunny spells and isolated showers to start this morning.

"During the afternoon and evening heavier thundery showers will extend from the west becoming widespread and merge to give longer spells of rain in places.

"Afternoon temperatures 16C to 19C, coolest in the west, in light to moderate west to southwest breezes.

"Tonight there will be scattered showers early but they will become more isolated as the night progresses and good dry, clear spells will develop. Lowest temperatures between 9C and 12C in a light to moderate westerly breeze.

"Sunday, will start mainly dry with sunny spells. Scattered showers in the west and northwest of the country will become widespread through the afternoon occasionally turning heavy.

"Afternoon temperatures 15C to 18C in light to moderate, occasionally fresh westerly winds."
