Ireland weather: The areas where it is most likely to snow tonight as temperatures plummet -2C

Ireland is in for a bitter few days with temperatures plummeting this week.

Forecasters are already warning that the mercury is set to plummet to sub zero as the country braces for a wintry blast over the coming days.

On Thursday morning Met Eireann issued a Status Yellow snowfall warning for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo as weather chiefs warned that hail, sleet and snow were likely to hit.

The warning which took effect at 10am on Thursday saw some wintry falls hit parts of the country however temperatures are set to plummet overnight before the sunshine returns.

While the warning is in place for six counties, as temperatures hit -2C tonight Met Eireann has said that it is likely that Atlantic coastal counties will be hit with wintry showers and possibly some snow.

Donegal looks set to get some wintry falls while thunderstorms could be on the way for Co. Mayo.

Forecasters are also predicting some wintry falls off the coast of Kerry so the Kingdom could very well see some snowfall overnight along with the Atlantic coastal counties.

The Status Yellow snow alert is due to expire at 7am on Friday warning however a separate windfall warning will come into effect on Saturday for Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford with gusts of up to 100km/h set to hit.

Friday will also bring a cold bite with a Met Eireann forecaster saying: "A widespread frost to begin on Friday with some icy stretches on untreated surfaces.

"It'll be a cold and increasingly windy day with sunny spells and some wintry showers early on.

"Showers will become more widespread during the afternoon and evening, possibly merging to longer spells of rain in places with some wintry falls possible."
