Ireland weather: Temperatures rocket to 22C this weekend - but there's bad news for some counties

Temperatures will soar to 22C in parts of the country this weekend as Ireland gets a mini heatwave, but things look rather bleak for the west coast.

The east and south of the country will get to enjoy plenty of sunshine in the coming days, but showers are set to prevail over Connacht and west Ulster.

Donegal in particular will get the worst of it after Met Eireann issued a 24-hour rain warning, which begins at 12pm.

Saturday will still see more average temperatures, before things start to sizzle on Sunday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Scattered showers in Connacht and Ulster this morning and early afternoon, but otherwise dry with sunny spells.

"Cloud will thicken in northern areas during the afternoon, with persistent and heavy rain moving in to north Connacht and Ulster from the Atlantic later in the afternoon.

"Through the evening, the rain will become mainly confined to west and north Ulster. A breezy day, with freshening southwesterly winds, increasing strong and gusty in western and northern coastal areas during the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 15C to 18C.

"Sunday morning will start off cloudy with some patchy drizzle near western coasts. It will brighten up in most areas during the afternoon, with warm, sunny spells developing.

"However, low cloud may linger near some southern and western coasts. Breezy at first with fresh and gusty southwesterly winds, strong near coasts in the west and north, but winds will ease later. Highest temperatures of 17C to 22C, warmest in north Munster and north Leinster."

Monday and Tuesday will be slightly more mixed, but temperatures are set to remain high.

The spokesman added: "Cloudy and humid with outbreaks of rain, mainly over the western half of the country.

"Some heavy downpours will be possible. Highest temperatures of 18C to 21C with light to moderate southeasterly winds.

"Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and limited bright or sunny periods. Showers will be most frequent in western areas.

"Staying quite warm in a light southerly breeze, with top temperatures of 18C to 22C."
