Ireland weather: Summer on hold as Met Eireann forecast bleak conditions during grim days ahead

A grim few days are in store for Ireland as heavy rain is to bucket down and temperatures are to stay cooler than the July average.

Met Eireann is predicting a windy weekend with pulses of rain lashing parts of the country at times.

There will be sunny spells on Thursday with highs of 16C in the north and 19C in the south.

However, the weather is set to take a turn with torrential rain and strong winds hitting the west later in the day.

A spokesman said: "Rain extending from the west to all areas Thursday night, becoming persistent and heavy in parts of the west.

"Southwesterly winds freshening, becoming strong on coasts. Minimum temperatures 10C to 12C."

The bleak conditions will continue on Friday as the weather chiefs are forecasting a "dull, wet and breezy" day .

The spokesman said: "Rain will be persistent and heavy at times in the west, but will tend to break up further east with dry spells developing, particularly in the midlands and southeast.

"Remaining cloudy throughout. Highest temperatures of 15C to 19C, in fresh southwest winds, strong on coasts.

"Cloudy on Friday night, with rain clearing to scattered showers, before another pulse of rain moves in from the west towards dawn.

"Mild overnight, with minimum temperatures of 11C to 15C degrees in a moderate southwesterly breeze."

Counties in the west and north will experience the worst of the rainfall on Saturday and Sunday.

"Saturday will be a mild, cloudy and breezy day with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, most persistent in the west and north.

"Highest temperatures of 16C in the northwest to 21C in the southeast, in a fresh southwest breeze, strong on south and west coasts."

The spokesman added: "Sunday will be a blustery day with sunshine and showers.

"The showers most frequent and heavy in the west and north.

"Cooler than previous days with brisk westerly winds which will be strong on coasts. Highs of 14C to 18C."
