Ireland weather: Storm Ellen to batter country with gale force winds, heavy rain and flooding as Met Eireann issues two warnings

Storm Ellen is set to batter Ireland on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing miserable wet and windy conditions.

Met Eireann currently has two weather alerts in place for the country - a Status Orange for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford, and a Status Yellow for the rest of the nation.

The caution warns that Storm Ellen will bring "severe and potentially damaging winds", along with heavy rain and flooding.

Meanwhile, Wednesday will start off dry and cloudy, before things take a dramatic turn later this evening.

A forecaster said: "Dry and cloudy to start for most this morning. However, outbreaks of rain in the south this morning will extend gradually northwards but parts of Ulster will remain dry until late afternoon.

"Another spell of rain will move into the south and southwest this evening, moving northwards. Highest temperatures of 17C to 21C.

"Winds mostly moderate to fresh easterly, strong at times in coastal areas and becoming very windy in the evening.

"Very windy or stormy from early on tonight.

"Rain in southern counties will move northwards as a further spell of persistent and locally heavy rain in the southwestern will extend northwards accompanied by strong and gusty southerly winds.

"Reaching gale force at times along southwestern and western coasts. Lowest temperatures of 10C to 14C.

"Continuing stormy along western coasts on Thursday morning and afternoon as heavy and thundery showers spread northwards along with some sunny spells.

"Fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds will be stronger along exposed coasts throughout the day with gale force winds at times along western coasts. Highest temperatures of 16C to 19C."

The forecaster added: "Continuing very windy on Thursday night. A further spell of wet and windy weather will move into Atlantic coastal counties early in the night, extending across the country overnight with further heavy and possibly thundery bursts.

"Lowest temperatures of 11C to 14C in fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds with near gale or gale force winds near coasts."

Friday, despite things easing a little, will remain very windy in many areas.

Sadly, it's going to continue to be wet and breezy over the weekend, with this spell of miserable weather continuing into next week.
