Ireland weather: Storm Barra ends with snow on the way before high pressure dominates for Christmas

The worst of Storm Barra has come and gone, as Irish conditions are due to settle down over the next few weeks.

The gale-force winds and torrential showers may be easing off, but Irish forecasters are predicting the arrival of snow for one area of the country, before a major relaxation in conditions in the run up to Christmas.

On Thursday morning, showers will spread eastwards across the country, but sunshine will follow for the afternoon will temperatures ranging from 5 to 10 degrees.

It'll be coldest in Ulster and mildest in Munster with moderate southerly winds.

Counties in the northwest could be in for some snow showers overnight on Thursday and into the following morning.

This will lead to a cold day on Friday with sunny spells in the east and northeast and showers of rain or hail along the west of the country.

Afternoon temperatures will range from 5 to 8 degrees "with an added wind chill factor, owing to a moderate to fresh northwest wind."

That night, patchy outbreaks of rain will move in across the country, in a mostly moderate southerly breeze with lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees Celsius.

Saturday will bring widespread falls of rain across the country with low cloud, hill, and coastal fog. Temperatures in the afternoon will range 9 to 12 degrees Celsius, in a mostly moderate southwesterly wind.

Sunday will then be “a cloudy day with outbreaks of rain and strengthening southerly winds. Afternoon temperatures will range 10 to 13 degrees Celsius.

As things begin to settle down, Met Eireann’s long-form forecast predicts that heading towards Christmas, “the signal for this period is slightly weaker, indications suggest that high pressure will remain dominant over the country which will keep conditions dry and settled overall.

“Rainfall totals will be slightly lower than average and temperatures will return to around normal for the end of December.

“As a result, there is potential for some frost by night but otherwise no hazardous weather is expected.”
