Ireland weather: Scorching highs of 24C this weekend before 'heavy rain' and 'thunderstorms'

Temperatures are set to rocket to a sweltering 24C this weekend as Ireland basks in the sunshine.

Met Eireann revealed we will enjoy warm and dry conditions with "good spells of sunshine."

However, they also warned of "widespread rain" and "scattered thunderstorms" on the way next week.

The mercury hit highs of 22C in Phoenix Park in Dublin and 21C in Oak Park in Carlow yesterday according to Met Eireann data.

And it's due to hit highs of 23C today, warmest away from Atlantic coasts.

Today will see rain in the west and north with a risk of heavy or thundery bursts in the morning but mainly dry over East Ulster and much of Leinster.

The rain will move eastwards and then finally clear through the evening to leave dry and sunny conditions.

Temperatures will still reach balmy highs of 17C to 19C degrees in the west and between 20C and 23C elsewhere with moderate southerly winds.

Tomorrow will be dry with good spells of sunshine and highs of between 18C to 23C.

However, it may be a degree or two lower along eastern coasts due to an onshore breeze.

And as we move into the weekend, experts are predicting warm, dry and sunny conditions with sizzling highs of 22C to 24C on Sunday.

Monday will see the mercury soar to highs of 25C but there's a big change ahead.

After a hot and humid day, forecasters say scattered thunderstorms and widespread falls of heavy rain will lead to localised flooding.

Heading into Tuesday, overnight thundery rain will clear the north and northwest by around midday.

A forecaster said: "Top temperatures will once again range 20 to 24 degrees Celsius, warmest over Leinster."
