Ireland weather rollercoaster as rain and high pressure play hide and seek with unexpected surprises

Ireland can expect somewhat of a weather rollercoaster over the coming days as high pressure plays a game of hide and seek with the rain.

Met Eireann says the dominant force shaping our weather will be high pressure. This powerful system will largely maintain stable conditions - but there’s a catch.

Its grip is set to weaken at times meaning occasional rain or showers will make surprise appearances.

Precipitation amounts are expected to be relatively low but it would be wise to keep an umbrella at hand in case the occasional showers catch you off guard.

As for temperatures, they will hover slightly above average for the time of year, edging towards 20C at times.

The national forecaster explained: “While high pressure will continue to be the main influence over our weather bringing broadly benign conditions in the outlook period, its dominance will wax and wane so occasional rain or showers will occur at times.

“Precipitation amounts will be relatively low, however, and temperatures look likely to trend mostly near to slightly above average for the time of year.”

Overall, this weekend’s weather is looking mild but cloudy with patchy rain at times.

Giving a day-by-day breakdown, Met Eireann said: “Patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle will continue to move eastwards across the country through the rest of Thursday, although many areas will remain dry. It will later brighten from the west as the rain clears. Highest temperatures of 15C to 19C, warmest in Leinster and Munster, in mainly light west to southwest breezes.

“Mostly dry Friday with a mix of cloud and hazy sunny spells. Isolated light showers may linger in the west early on, although these will generally clear by midday. Highest temperatures of 16C to 19C in very light northwesterly breezes.

“Often cloudy and damp Saturday with patchy rain and drizzle and mist patches too. Highs of 14C to 18C in light southwest or variable breezes.

“Mostly cloudy Sunday with patchy rain and drizzle at first, breaking up into sunny spells and showers during the afternoon and evening. Top temperatures of 15C to 19C generally but a little cooler in the northwest in light northerly or variable breezes.

“Sunny spells and showers Monday, clearing most places in the evening. Highest temperatures of 13C to 17C in light to moderate northwest breezes.”
