Ireland weather: One of hottest weeks of the year in store as Met Eireann posts six-day forecast

Ireland will see highs of more than 20C for six days on the trot - making it one of the warmest weeks of the year.

The country has experienced a lacklustre summer in terms of weather, but Met Eireann is forecasting a change in fortunes.

However, it mightn't be all plain sailing as heavy rain and thundery showers are set to hit most areas at different times between now and Sunday.

Here is the latest six-day forecast from Met Eireann:

Today (Tuesday)

Tuesday will be warm with temperatures of up to 23C but it will be breezy at times and some places may get torrential rain.

Donegal, Galway and Mayo are to get the worst of any rainfall as a Status Yellow warning will be valid in these counties until 1pm on Wednesday.

Met Eireann said: "Today will be mostly cloudy and humid. Persistent and occasionally heavy rain in the northeast and east will clear into the Irish Sea early this morning, with patchier outbreaks of rain or drizzle elsewhere.

"Later this morning, further heavy and persistent rain will move into the northwest and will slowly spread southeast through the afternoon and evening.

"Remaining mostly dry in the southeast, however, with some warm sunshine at times during the afternoon. Very blustery with fresh to strong southwesterly winds. Top temperatures of 16 to 22 or 23 degrees."

Wednesday

It will be a wet and windy start to Wednesday but it should clear up in the afternoon.

"Tomorrow will start cloudy with outbreaks of rain continuing in most places through the morning, heavy at times.

"The rain will clear during the afternoon, with drier and brighter weather following from the west, although there will be a few isolated showers around too.

"Breezy during the morning with fresh southerly winds, occasionally strong in the south and east, but winds will gradually ease and veer westerly through the day.

"Highest temperatures of 16 or 17 degrees in the northwest, but reaching 18 to 22 degrees elsewhere."

Thursday

There will be highs of 22C again on Thursday.

"Thursday will bring a mix of cloud and sunny spells.

"Cloudiest in the west and south with some patchy drizzle at times.

"Highest temperatures of 19 to 22 degrees in most places, but a degree or two cooler towards the south coast in a moderate southerly breeze."

Friday

Met Eireann said: "On Friday there will be sunny spells and showers, most frequent in the northwest and southeast with some thundery bursts possible.

"Highest temperatures of 18 to 23 degrees, warmest in the south and east, with light to moderate southerly winds veering westerly."

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday and Sunday will see highs of 21C and 22C respectively - and there is to be good spells of sunshine on both days.

"On Saturday there will be sunny spells and some showers, mainly in the west and north.

"Highest temperatures of 18 to 21 degrees with light and variable breezes.

"Sunday is looking mainly dry and sunny with highest temperatures of 19 to 22 degrees."
