Ireland weather: Multiple Met Eireann warnings as thunder, rain and high winds to lash country

Gale force winds will bash Ireland today with Met Eireann warning of unseasonably gusty conditions.

A weather advisory remains in place for all of the country until 9pm tonight.

Antrim and Derry in Northern Ireland have both been issued yellow warnings for the high winds although no county down south is under one yet.

There is however a status yellow marine warning for gale force winds as well as a small craft warning.

The forecaster states: "Westerly winds will reach gale force 8 today, on Irish coastal waters from Loop Head to Erris Head to Malin Head."

North and western parts of the country will get the worst of the rain with thundery showers expected at times.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: " Today will be a rather windy day with a mix of sunny spells and blustery showers. The showers will be heaviest and most frequent in Ulster and Connacht, with a chance of some thundery downpours.

"Cooler and fresher than recent days with highs of 13 to 17 degrees. Fresh to strong westerly winds will be gusty at times, especially around the showers and will reach gale force this afternoon on western coasts.

"Showers becoming isolated tonight and mostly confined to Ulster, north Connacht and along Atlantic coasts, with mainly dry and clear conditions elsewhere. Lows of 9 to 11 degrees. Gusty west to northwest winds will gradually moderate."

Monday will be a big improvement with much drier weather although temperatures won't get too high.

The forecaster added: "Isolated showers will continue in Ulster and near some Atlantic Coasts tomorrow, but it will be mainly dry elsewhere with sunny spells. Highest temperatures will range from 14 to 16 degrees in the north and west to 17 or 18 degrees in the east and south, in moderate northwest breezes."
